23-OOO-YEAR-OLD RHINO
Nonprofessionals may easily mistake it for a recent safari
trophy. Actually, the woolly rhinoceroses (Coelodonta
Antiquitatis) swarmed Europe during the Ice Age circa
21,000 BC. In 1929 the carcass of a young female was
unearthed in southern Poland. We probably owe its truly
remarkable state of preservation to common salt and mineral
oil the swamp which sucked down the poor creature was
saturated with. The sensational find has been stuffed and
exhibited alongside the skeleton and some well-preserved
organs (e.g. the tongue and the windpipe) of the same
animal.
The original 23,000-year-old hairy rhino may well be
the envy of every museum of natural history in the world. No
wonder it is the pride of the tiny Krakow’s Muzeum Przyrodnicze at 9
Sw. Sebastiana street.
