Breaking the news from Krakow, Poland Car Theft on the Rise While Crime Generally Hardly Abating in Krakow. After five years in a row of decline the number of stolen cars rose in Krakow last year. Recently published police statistics reveal 1,039 motor vehicle thefts in 2009 compared to 818 in 2008, 1,011 in 2007, 1,781 in 2006, and 2,600 in 2005.
German-built cars, notably Volkswagens and Audis, remain the most popular makes with car thieves in Krakow followed by Spain's Seats. Areas worst hit by the scourge are high-rise housing developments of Pradnik Bialy, Pradnik Czerwony, Prokocim, and Podgorze. Even more alarming is the sharp increase in the number of muggings that rose in Krakow almost by half in 2009 compared with year 2008. Most of the holdups take place around schools, near train and bus stations, and at tram and bus stops, typically both victims and culprits being juveniles. Yet even such apparently safe places as shopping centers weren’t free of mugging and some unfortunate tourists also suffered. Although homicide was up in the city over 2009, its occurrence remained negligible and mostly stemmed from family feuds and drunken brawls. Good news is lower number of housebreaking – under 4,000 break-ins over the last year. It is noteworthy that the police in Krakow managed to nearly double the detection rate for burglary and theft in 2009 against the 2008 figure. |
