Breaking the news from Krakow, Poland Rain, Floods, And DisruptionsSeveral days of almost constant rain throughout southern Poland wreaked havoc on transportation in Krakow and the entire Malopolska province from Sunday, May 16th on.
In many places rivers and streams overflowed causing floods. Among other afflicted towns are such popular tourist destinations as Oswiecim, where the former nazi death camp Auschwitz is situated, and Wadowice, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II. One of Krakow’s monuments, Pilsudski Mound (Kopiec Pilsudskiego), a 20th-century barrow commemorating Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, lost part of its slope in a landslide. Closed bridges, detours, and swamped streets resulted in huge traffic jams, which paralyzed Krakow. By the same token, travel to the city by road was hindered due to closures of some routes and enormous tailbacks elsewhere. Many trains, usually local ones, were cancelled and the rest delayed, often by hours in the case of long-distance services. And a number of railways lines, notably the railroad linking Krakow and Zakopane, were temporarily shut altogether. Nearly 3,000 residents had to be evacuated from flooded areas throughout the Malopolska province. Some villages and towns in the Krakow region suffered extensive damage from floods. At least four people drowned in separate incidents in Malopolska over three days. |
